What Kind of Mouthwash is Best for Me?

Posted .

Mouthwashes can be a great solution to bad breath. If someone in the office can tell what you had for lunch after having a conversation with you, it might be time to use a mouthwash. But there are mouthwashes and rinses on the market that can not only freshen your breath, but help fight plaque, tartar and cavities, and give you an extra dose of fluoride.

A mouthwash that does fight the bacteria, plaque and gingivitis in your mouth, and contains fluoride is a therapeutic mouthwash. Mouthwash can also be used to fight dry mouth. There are over-the-counter brands that contain xylitol which can help with the condition. After an exam or consultation, your dentist may give you a prescription for a specific mouthwash, depending on your needs.

On the other hand, a cosmetic mouthwash has no health benefits but will temporarily eliminate bad breath.

Children under the age of six should not use mouthwash. Since they may be unclear about spitting it out, they may swallow it, which could make them sick. Many mouthwashes contain alcohol, which could also cause intoxication.
