How About a Bridge of Your Own?

As the city works on the new bridge for the Camp Creek Greenway, have you given any thought to getting a bridge of your own? It’s many people have lost teeth for one reason or another. At Lacour Family Dentistry, we want to make sure that you have all of your natural teeth. But sometimes that just isn’t possible. Accidents happen, and teeth get cavities. While both of those things may be true, it isn’t a good idea to go through life without a complete smile.

A full set of teeth have a number of advantages. For one thing, they allow you to eat properly, and speak effectively. Second, if you have spaces in your smile, plaque and bacteria have extra places to hide, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, and possibly the loss of even more teeth! Your teeth have another important job: keeping each other line. Literally. If you have one or several missing teeth, the rest of the teeth in that area can start to drift out of alignment. That means they will start to strike one another at odd angles, which will cause damage to your tooth enamel. That can mean tooth decay and if left untreated, you guessed it: even more lost teeth. Finally, a damaged smile can make you feel uncomfortable and self conscious. You know what we’re talking about – all those times you have dodged having your picture taken, or that cramp in your lips from trying to talk to people while hiding your teeth. Or covering your mouth when you laugh, so no one notices that your smile isn’t at its best.

Our dentist Dr. Kevin Lacour has a terrific way for you to put the style back in your smile: a bridge. And it won’t take anywhere near as long as the one the City of Lilburn is putting in! A bridge can replace one tooth, or several teeth adjacent to one another. A bridge can be a great compromise for people who can’t have dental implants for one reason or another, and who may not feel comfortable with having all of the dental work needed for dentures. If you decided to use a bridge to fill in your smile, Dr. Lacour will first remove the enamel from the teeth at each end of the space in your smile. Then, he will take impressions of the area, which will be used to create your bridge. Using CEREC technology, the dentist can make your bridge while you wait! Your new bridge will consist of prosthetic teeth attached to two crowns. Those crowns will be cemented in place on the two teeth at each end of your smile, giving you a replacement teeth that can for years. But remember that just because your new teeth aren’t your natural ones, that doesn’t mean you can slack off on the brushing and flossing! Your new bridge will depend on healthy gums to be successful, and if tooth decay finds its way under your crowns, your bridge can fail.
