Fixing Minor Cosmetic Problems

Posted .

Not every problem with a tooth is a major one. Sometimes, the damage to your tooth may be a chip, a stain that you could not remove with a whitening treatment or toothpaste, or a tooth that is too short or unevenly spaced. Fortunately, those problems can easily be remedied with a dental bond.

Bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive dental procedures. Unless your dentist needs to remove decayed material, no anesthetic is required. First, your dentist will mix a bonding resin that it matches the color of the tooth. Then, they will etch the surface of your tooth, which will help the bond adhere to it. Then the dentist will mold the bond into its proper shape. After the bond has cured, the dentist will trim and polish the bond. Your bond will last around 10 years if you take proper care of it. Your bond is not nearly as strong as your normal teeth, and you can damage it by eating tough or hard foods, or by chewing on objects such as pens, pencils, or biting your nails. Your bond can also be stained with dark-colored foods and beverages or by tobacco use. You will also need to take care of your bond by brushing your teeth twice a day, and flossing once a day. You will need to continue to see your dentist twice a year for your regular cleanings and exams, and to give your dentist the opportunity to check your bond.
